A message from the Executive Principal
Mr Wade Haynes
“These priorities are underpinned by a focus on ‘visible learning’ where teachers are learning through the eyes of a student and students are seeing learning through the eyes of their teacher.”

Welcome
A very warm welcome to you for the 2021 school year and our first newsletter for the year. It has been fantastic to welcome our students, both new and returning. We hope that every family had an enjoyable time throughout the holiday break and that you feel ready for a productive year. We extend a warm State High welcome to the new families who have joined us and we look forward to working with all of you over the coming year.
We are celebrating 100 years of outstanding education in our school. We have launched the celebrations with an event last Friday and a little media coverage to set the stage for a series of exciting activities through the year. We are hoping that current parents/guardians and students, as well as alumni, will all have a chance to be involved in one or more of these Centenary events this year. You will find more detail on the Centenary website.

Every student is important to us. We have more students than last year, with an increasing number of local students. We have around 550 Year 7 students joining us this year and around 3,450 students in total.
These first few weeks are about supporting our students to make a positive start to their learning. They need information, to establish some routines and to get started. We’re all here to help that process along. Some handy information links to get you started:
Lesson times
Lesson times for our students can be found on our website and in the Parent Information Handbook.
Parent Information Handbook
Our Parent Information Handbook is available on our website. It contains information about the organisation of Brisbane State High School. Please take the time to read through the handbook and keep it for your reference. In the handbook, you will find information about the day-to-day operations of the school, together with contact information for key personnel.
Sport this week
Another handy resource is the ‘Sport this Week’ link on our website under ‘Extra-Curricular’ > ‘Sports’. This is a good one to bookmark. It is updated around the middle of each week.
Extra-curricular registration
The registration process of all extra-curricular activities, including registration forms for Girls Sport, Boys Sport, Cultural Activities and Other Activities, can be found on our website:

School communications
School communication to parents and guardians is generally sent via email or SMS. It is therefore important to keep the school informed of any changes to your contact details. You can advise of changes to your contact details by emailing student_records@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au.
Please be aware that in some instances, our emails are delivered into ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ inboxes. Please check those inboxes in case emails from the school have been delivered into those inboxes rather than your primary inbox. Unfortunately, this is out of our control and your settings may need to be adjusted to ensure emails sent from our school are delivered to your primary inbox. Depending on your email provider, there are a few solutions. These include adding the school’s ‘sender’ email address from any official school emails that wind up in your ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ inbox to your contacts or ‘VIP’ list, or marking the email as ‘not junk’.
2021 School Priorities
Our Strategic Plan describes our three priority areas. These priorities continue in 2021:

These priorities are underpinned by a focus on ‘visible learning’ where teachers are learning through the eyes of a student and students are seeing learning through the eyes of their teacher.
Class of 2020
I am very pleased for our graduating students of 2020. There were some very excited students as they received results and offers for this year. They worked their way through a new system and a COVID year to achieve, possibly, record breaking results. We had 100% of students complete the requirements for a QCE/QCA, again. We are committed to ensuring that every student achieves this qualification.
In terms of ATAR results, we had really strong results. It should be said that our students produced very high-quality work, made good progress and they worked very hard. The teaching staff were delighted to hear about the way 10 of our students [10 we just picked as a sample] progressed over Year 11 and 12 and how this led to a preferred option for this year. We had one student achieve an ATAR of 99.95 with a further 21 students achieving 99.75 or better, making 22 of the top 150 students in Queensland. Based on the best available conversion, we had 72 students with an ATAR equivalent to an OP1. That would eclipse the best result in this state ever. We had 63 students achieve a 99 or better and 269 students an ATAR of 90 or better. Nearly half (49%) of all results were As. Eighty percent of subject results were 65 or better and 26% were 90 or above. Thirty subject results were 100% and 28 were 99%. The median result was 92.65.
Our students had a very good year. I’d like to congratulate them on their hard work over an extended period of time, while acknowledging that they had excellent support from classroom teachers and their mentors.
You can read more about their results on our school website:

Ms Kim McKernan
We were very sad to hear that Ms Kim McKernan, our School Based Youth Health Nurse since 2013, passed away on 15 December 2020. During her time at State High, Ms McKernan supported many of our students. Our sincere condolences are sent particularly to Kim’s two sons – Jack and Tom – as well as family and friends.
The Honourable Michael Bryce AM AE KStJ
We were further saddened to hear that the Honourable Michael Bryce AM AE KStJ – former student (Class of 1955) and Legend of State High – passed away on 16 January 2021 after suffering from a prolonged illness. Mr Bryce was an Australian architect and graphic and industrial designer. His most famous logo creation was the 2000 Sydney Olympic squiggle of the Opera House. Last year, we were honoured to have Mr Bryce provide invaluable guidance, support and encouragement to our student centenary logo team with whom he worked in the design of the centenary logo for our school’s centenary celebrations this year. Our thoughts are with Mr Bryce’s wife, former Australian Governor-General, Dame Quentin Bryce, as well as his family and friends.
We extend our best wishes to our students and families for a great start to the year.
Mrs Rebecca Johnson

First weeks of Year 7
Our Year 7 students have launched into 2021 – we can’t wait to watch them soar!
Some standout moments from the week include:
- The first day where students came together with the 2021 student leaders and teachers to experience their first taste of learning at State High. Highlights from the day include the paper plane launch and the War Cry – students were actively engaged in building school culture, which was fantastic.
- Students learning about the ‘State High way’ regarding routines and uniform during Academia, Resilience and Careers (ARC) class and assembly. I have loved walking the corridors and seeing students lined up with their resources, ready to learn. As I walk through classrooms, students have been able to articulate the learning goals of the lesson and when they leave, they do so respectfully and in impeccable uniforms.
- Last Monday, all Year 7 students and Year 10 Peer Supporters participated in their first Peer Support session for the term. This peer-led program, held on Monday afternoons from Week 2 to 7 during Term 1, is designed to assist our Year 7 students in developing connections with others, as well as the skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to succeed in high school. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching students build connections with each other, with their peer supporters and teachers during the Peer Support afternoon, in classes and at lunch times.
- Seeing students grapple with the Learning Pit. Transitioning to high school is a big step for all students and it’s been wonderful seeing students step outside their comfort zone and overcome challenges. Keep embracing these learning opportunities, Year 7 students!

We have so many students at State High achieving remarkable things and we want to showcase them all. We share school-based student achievements on our social media platforms while news of student successes in external programs is showcased on our ‘News’ page on our website.
We want to celebrate our students’ achievements, so if you are aware of any that we should celebrate, please advise us of all the relevant details via email – newsletter@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au – and please include photographs with your message.

Prefects

Leadership Camp
Last Sunday, 31 January, the Prefect group, accompanied by Miss Simons, Miss Packer and Mr Haynes, travelled to Moreton Island to partake in a leadership development and team building camp.
Over the three days, the Prefects underwent group development sessions, which allowed for important reflection and alignment on our strengths as a team. We were able to discuss the key values that resonated best with us, which provided direction for our initiatives and goals we have planned for 2021.
As part of these sessions, Dr Neil Carrington, CEO of Act for Kids, joined us to reinforce messages about leading self and others.
Along with our group discussions, the Prefect team participated in many activities on Moreton Island, which helped us come together as a team and get to know one another better. A highlight for many of us was the snorkelling around the wrecks, closely followed by the desert safari trip and wild dolphin feeding. It was an amazing experience to see Australian wildlife up close and personal whilst learning about them. These activities, along with the group development sessions, allowed for us to understand each other’s values on a deeper level, creating a strong family-like bond. This bond will allow for the success and precision of the Prefect group in the school’s centenary year.
The camp provided opportunity to build rapport with a foundation of trust and motivation to allow effective collaboration for the upcoming year ahead.
We would like to thank Miss Packer, Miss Simons, Miss Jordan, Mr Haynes and Dr Carrington for the opportunity and for organising the trip.
This year, the Prefect team’s goals include working towards unifying our school community and planning innovative initiatives for State High’s centenary year. We can’t wait to take on the year and put our goals into action.

Peers for Academic Success

Kicking off PAS in 2021!
We started off 2021 with a bang when the Peers for Academic Success (PAS) team met during the holidays to plan for this exciting new year. But firstly, we sadly said goodbye to our amazing Year 12, 2020 PAS Leaders—Ankitha Balakrishnan, Elouise Gaffney, Julie Tran and Alex Merkel—who led the team through the challenges encountered in 2020. We thank them for their dedication, commitment, and unwavering guidance. This year, we are delighted to announce the appointment of the following new leaders into our PAS family: Year 11 students Alexander Lovisi and Trinity Pham, and Year 10 students Ashwin Somani, Petar Jovanovic and Lei-Ao Peng.
PAS will officially kick off in Week 4 with several jam-packed workshops aimed at developing skills that are extremely beneficial for effective buddy/mentor relationships and to enhance our learning. Our ‘golden’ goal this year is to provide empowering feedback. This goal will build our sense of community and embed a core value of our program: unity! We hope this will allow mentors, buddies and leaders to grow and develop academically and socially within our learning community.
So, with loads of new initiatives and a busy schedule, we’re pumped to make 2021 a year to remember!

In this newsletter, we would like to introduce you to some of our new key staff members.
Ms Amanda Chamberlain – General Manager

I was welcomed to the Queensland Department of Education after relocating to Brisbane back in 2010. Prior to our move across the border, I was raising my three children in the idyllic waters of Byron Bay. As they say, “all good things must come to an end”, and their educational needs outweighed my desire to watch the whales swim by.
Upon arrival in Brisbane, I commenced my first administration role at Sherwood State School. Ten years later, after numerous school appointments, I have the privilege of leading the Corporate and Administrative Services of Queensland’s largest (and best) State High school.
I could not have chosen a better time, this being our centenary year, and all the great celebrations that entails. It is wonderful to be able to pay homage to the fantastic history of our great school knowing that I will be part of creating its exciting future direction.
Mr Jamie Hunt: Deputy Principal – Junior School Year 7 & 8

This year, I am excited to take up the position of Deputy Principal for Year 7 and 8 at Brisbane State High School. For the past nine years, I have been based at Kirwan State High School in Townsville, where I was a classroom Drama and English teacher, Head of Creative Arts and then a Deputy Principal. A highlight from my time in Townsville was directing and producing the annual school musical; these productions were well-received by the school community. I have always been passionate about supporting students to experience and achieve success in their schooling and look forward to fostering positive relationships with the students at State High.
Mr Matthew Thornton – Deputy Principal – Year 9 & 10

I am very excited to have taken on the role of Deputy Principal for Year 9 and 10 at Brisbane State High School. I have been part of the State High community for the past six years and in that time, I have worked directly with our students in the role of Head of Year. I am passionate about students challenging themselves to achieve, both inside and outside the classroom. I enjoy real estate development and have a keen passion for sports. Teaching is the most rewarding job in the world, and I can’t wait to challenge myself in this new role and working with our wonderful students.
Mrs Michelle Rivadeneyra – Deputy Principal – Year 11 & 12

After spending the last 11 years working on the Gold Coast, I am excited to be back in Brisbane and join the State High Family as the Deputy Principal for Year 11 and 12. My passion in learning and leadership led to me completing a Masters of Education majoring in Leadership and Management at QUT. In 2019, I was awarded the Bond University Excellence in Secondary Education Leadership Award and proceeded to be successful in obtaining a scholarship to complete the Advanced Leadership Program at the National Excellence in School Leadership Institute (NESLI) in 2020. I am thrilled to work with such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of students and staff in 2021. As a Canadian who now calls Queensland home, I love taking my dog (a Rhodesian Ridgeback) to the beach and spending time outside in the glorious Australian weather.
Mrs Rebecca Johnson – Head of Year 7

I am absolutely thrilled to be the Head of Year 7 in 2021. I joined the State High family in 2015 as Head of Year 9 and, since then, I have enjoyed working with students, parents/guardians, community groups and universities in my role as Head of Partnerships and Transitions. I am passionate about the holistic development of all students and I look forward to watching our new Year 7 students soar in 2021. In my spare time, I love taking our camper out with the family and enjoying the great outdoors.
Mr Graeme Harding – Head of Year 8

I am really excited to have joined the team at State High in its centenary year as the new Head of Year 8. I have been working in state education for 15 years with roles in the Student Support space for six years at schools on both the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. I feel privileged to be a part of a team committed to students achieving holistically, so I am excited about supporting a new generation of young people to flourish, become all they aspire to be and develop a sense of belonging in a place where they experience positive emotions, positive connections and feel valued. “Pursue what is meaningful. Not what is expedient”.
Ms Abby Green – Head of Senior English

I am excited to have stepped into the role of Head of Senior English here at Brisbane State High School. I have worked as a part of State High’s English faculty over the past five years and, in that time, I have enjoyed being part of a dynamic and highly skilled teaching team. Prior to joining State High, I spent nearly a decade living and working in Central Queensland, where it wasn’t unusual to step out of the classroom to see kangaroos grazing on the school oval. No matter where I have worked, I have always felt that being a part of a student’s journey through their senior schooling phase is a privilege and I look forward to working with the Senior English team and our impressive senior cohort in 2021.
Ms Carly Simpson – Guidance Officer – Junior School (Year 7 & 8)

I am thrilled and excited to be joining the Student Services team as the Junior School Guidance Officer for Year 7 and 8 in 2021. I have been a Drama, Art and English teacher at State High for many years and have spent the past two years as a part of the wonderful Learning and Enrichment team. I am passionate about working with young people to help support them with their social and emotional barriers to learning. I love working as part of a team to assist students to have a positive and fulfilling high school experience. I look forward to supporting our Year 7s with their transition to high school.
Battle of the Sexes
Our Battle of the Sexes swimming competition was held last Tuesday afternoon at Musgrave Park Pool. We congratulate our boy swimmers on their victory, a close one over our girl swimmers this year. Three points was the winning margin. We took the opportunity to flashback to 1995, when State High introduced this annual event.

Mrs Michelle Koripas P&C President
“Supporting our students to reach their full potential through actively engaging parents, school and community.”

A big welcome to our new and returning families. It is going to be an exciting and busy year for us all, given this is a particularly special year with our school celebrating its 100-year anniversary!
We have made some positive changes to our P&C Association to kick start the year. Firstly, we have restructured and introduced two new positions to support our parents and guardians, citizens and, ultimately, our fabulous students.
We welcome Barb Grondin, our Operations Manager, and Mrs Pam Ryley, our Administration Officer, to our P&C Association team. Both are highly experienced and haven't wasted any time getting acquainted with all that is our P&C at this incredible and dynamic school.
Secondly, we have moved office locations. You can now find us at R Block, located on the corner of Glenelg and Merivale Streets, just across from the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. You can stop by our P&C office to say “hello” and ask questions during our business hours, or simply leave a message. Contact details for the P&C Association are available via our website:
P&C Association volunteering opportunities
Uniform Shop – thank you!
Our Uniform Shop staff and the P&C Association Executive extend a very big “thank you” to our team of amazing parent and student volunteers who have helped welcome new families to the school during Term 4, 2020, and in the first three weeks of the 2021 school year. Through partnering with our Uniform Shop staff and Year 10 and Year 11 student volunteers, our Uniform Shop fitted 670 new students and distributed over 900 online orders and Year 12 jerseys. It was a resounding success! We look forward to joining forces again with our now experienced volunteers and hopefully some new parents and guardians in Term 4, 2021. Look out for centenary items, which will be available to purchase soon!
Payment at canteens and Uniform Shop
We would like to remind families that the P&C Association operates using a cashless system. Please pay by credit card or Student ID Card – thank you. During Term 1, Year 7 students and new students are able to pay using cash in the I Block canteen while they await their Student ID Card. This term, all other students can top up their Student ID Card at any of our canteens using cash.
Canteen volunteers
Commencing Week 4, Term 1
Canteen volunteering will be beginning very soon. Our volunteer registration page is still open if you would like to come and help at the school. There’s no minimum requirement – all help is greatly appreciated. It’s the perfect opportunity to see the school in action, contribute with your time and meet other parents and guardians in a friendly and meaningful way.
Our volunteer days in Term 1 will be Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10:45am to 12:45pm. In Term 2, we hope to add an extra day. Free parking is available at the school for our canteen volunteers. We look forward to hearing from you.
Centenary events planning
State High turns 100 in 2021 and we are planning on joining the celebrations. If you have experience in event planning, marketing, communications, graphic design or would just like to get involved with anything that you can, we need you. Please join our Events Committee – to enquire, please contact Ms Melissa Buirchell, Vice-President – Growth, via email – vp.growth@bshspandc.org.

The Arts
Ms Aimee Gust Head of Department
Year 12 Film, Television & New Media
To kick off their first assessment exploring participation in media, Year 12 Film, Television & New Media (FTVNM) students went to university.
After catching the bus to QUT Kelvin Grove on a hot summer’s day, students were very impressed to enter their first (wide-screen and magnificently air-conditioned) lecture theatre.
Academics from QUT’s Digital Media Research Centre, Professor Michael Dezuanni and Mr Bondy Kaye, shared their knowledge on cutting-edge new media theory. Not only did students and teachers learn about emerging trends in social media entertainment and how the features of emerging technologies, such as TikTok and Minecraft, have enabled them to become so widely consumed; our conceptual understanding was also enriched with some big ideas about relational labour, micro-targeting and embedded advertising, micro-celebrities and algorithmic culture. The presentation provided a fantastic grounding for launching into the IA1 Case Study Investigation and equipped students with some excellent vocabulary for sharing their findings.
Thank you so much to Professor Dezuanni and Mr Kaye from QUT for giving up their time to so wonderfully summarise the thought-provoking themes of Unit 3 FTVNM.

Wharton Global High School Investment Competition
State High’s team, Gryphon Group, has been announced as a regional finalist in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition. This annual contest is run by Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Global Youth Program, in which students compete in teams, led by an advisor, to win the chance to manage the wealth of a potential client.

Languages
Mrs Ashlee Bruce Head of Department
From the Languages Department
Welcome to 2021! For our new students, we are sure that your experiences as Languages students at State High will be fantastic! This year, we will explore how Language Learning is for Life. We will do this by looking at things such as language use for self-identity, for family and community connection, for careers, for cognitive development, cultural interaction and understanding, cultural appreciation and empathy—the list really is endless! We are also excited to share that in 2021, Brisbane State High School will begin its use of the program ImmerseMe, which is a virtual-reality based program for learners of languages. This program will be used with our Year 10 Languages students (all year), and our Year 9 continuing students in Semester 2, and will enable our students to participate in scenario-based conversations in the languages they are learning. Given the current international travel restrictions, this is likely to be the closest we can get to having our students in the countries themselves! We are also exploring ways that we can provide this program to our Languages students in other year levels—we will keep you informed as the details evolve. We look forward to working with our students this year, and watching their language proficiency and cultural understanding grow.

Support for Academic Success

SAS has an open-door policy to all students. Students can choose to work independently, seek teacher aide support, or enrol in our mentoring program where they are paired with a Senior Mentor. Senior Mentors offer their guidance to support junior students in specific subject areas to complete homework and assessment. SAS aims to assist students to develop effective learning strategies and positive learning routines through the guidance and the sharing of another student’s experiences. Our mentors’ voluntary participation in this program is a reflection of our learning community and the collaboration between our junior and senior students is an important contribution to our positive learning culture.
SAS runs Monday to Thursday for one hour directly after school in I Block, room 1.21. Inquiries regarding participation in our SAS mentoring program can be emailed to our Learning & Enrichment department – Learning&Enrichment@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au. Parents and guardians should state their child’s preferred attendance day and indicate if there is a specific subject, or subjects, they would like the mentoring session to focus on. This will allow us to best assign a suitable Senior Mentor.

Extra-Curricular Activities in 2021
State High’s Extra-Curricular program offers over 40 activities (Sporting, Cultural and Other) that provide opportunities for students to participate, learn, develop and excel. These activities are offered at various times throughout the school year.
Activity communication
StudentNet
Students can access information about extra-curricular trial/audition times, activity dates, meetings times and locations and other important information, which is communicated via Student Notices on StudentNet. To further support your child, please check that they are accessing this information on a daily basis.

Other Activities
Completion of the Annual General Consent form is required before students are able to participate in extra-curricular activities and is available via the registration links on our website.
Completion of this process does not guarantee selection in the activity. Students are still required to complete activity-specific surveys prior to selections to express interest in trialling.
A direct link to the Annual General Consent form is below:
The Annual General Consent Form was included in the Enrolment Offer Package for Year 7, 2021, and therefore has already been completed for those students.
Volunteering
Volunteers underpin the success of extra-curricular activities at State High. Due to the number of activities occurring each week, it is impossible to have them all covered by teachers. Any assistance that parents or past students can offer in coaching or managing, scoring, costuming, ticketing, officiating or working in the canteen is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in volunteering in an activity, please contact the relevant MIC. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sub-committees
Parents and guardians can also support an activity by becoming a member of the relevant sub-committee. Sub-committee members assist in fostering support of both the activity and the MIC amongst parents/guardians. Our sub-committees also provide invaluable financial assistance through fundraising and are overseen by the school’s P&C Association. If you are available to assist, please contact the MIC of the relevant activity.
We currently have active sub-committees in the following activities:
- Athletics (QGSSSA and GPS)
- Cricket (GPS)
- Cross Country (QGSSSA and GPS)
- Dance Troupes
- Football (QGSSSA and GPS)
- Instrumental Music
- Rowing (BSRA and GPS)
- Rugby
Levies
All non-curriculum activities conducted at the school have a ‘User Pays’ structure. A levy to participate in an activity is payable to cover the cost of that year’s delivery of the activity. If you have any questions relating to levies, please contact the Master in Charge (MIC) of the activity or B Block Finance Counter.
District/regional nominations
Brisbane State High School is a member of Metropolitan East region for Queensland School Sport Championships. To be eligible to compete in Queensland School Sport Championships, students need to trial for selection in the district team.
District information
Mt Gravatt District: 12-year-old students only (2009)
Composite District: 13 to 18-year-old students
Trial information will be advised to students via StudentNet. Students are then required to nominate and collect consent forms/trial information from the D Block Extra-Curricular Office (D101).
Students will not be eligible to attend trials without the correct paperwork.
Students wishing to attend District or Regional trials must be of a suitable standard. Restrictions apply in some sports to ensure the trialling process does not become unmanageable.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
How do I give consent for my child to participate in extra-curricular activities?
Registration and consent forms are available via the Extra-Curricular page on the school website. When completing registration forms, please select all the activities you give consent for your child to participate in.
How do I know when an activity is on?
The Brisbane State High School website provides information relating to activity dates and times.
By joining the Team App for the activity, you will receive all the latest information relative to the activity. StudentNet is also used to distribute information directly to students.
Can students participate in more than one extra-curricular activity?
Students can participate in more than one activity provided the competition/performance days/times do not clash. GPS and QGSSSA rules stipulate that students can only participate in one sport on the day of competition.
Does everyone gain selection in an activity?
While every effort is made to maximise opportunities for participation for all students, certain activities have limited availability, usually due to circumstances beyond the school’s control. There are many extra-curricular activities on offer, so students should consider an alternative if their first choice is not available.
What uniform do students wear for extra-curricular activities?
Some activities have specific uniforms that can be purchased from our school’s Uniform Shop. Information relating to uniforms will be provided within the individual activity’s communications. Uniform requirements are also outlined on the individual activity pages on the school website.
Is there a cost to participate in extra-curricular activities?
All non-curriculum activities conducted at the school have a user-pays structure. A levy to participate in an activity is payable to cover the cost of that year’s delivery of the activity.
How do I volunteer for an activity?
Masters in Charge (MIC) of an activity will publish a request for volunteers via Team App prior to the commencement of the activity. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the relevant activity’s MIC.
Are there any parent/guardian support groups for the activities?
Some activities operate parent/guardian support groups known as sub-committees. Sub-committees assist in fostering support of both the activity and the MIC amongst parents/guardians. These sub-committees meet on a regular basis and are overseen by the school’s P&C Association. Information about each sub-committee is listed on the individual activity’s page.
When do extra-curricular activities take place?
Extra-curricular activities are conducted during a variety of hours and days/nights, including weekends. Training/rehearsal times are generally scheduled before or after classes during the school week. Some training/rehearsals may occasionally occur on weekends.
Please visit the school website for more information about extra-curricular activities.

Ms Karen Hadfield Director of Cultural Activities
Welcome to 2021! It is shaping up to be a very exciting centenary year for Cultural Activities.
Over the next few weeks, Dance Troupes, Vocal Ensembles and Instrumental Music will be commencing their rehearsals. If you would like more information about Cultural Activities at State High, please visit the Cultural Activities section on the school website.
General enquires for Cultural Activities should be directed to Extra-Curricular Office via email – culturalevents@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au.
Instrumental Music
All Instrumental Music lessons commence in Week 2. Students have been sent their timetable for weekly lessons and information regarding their ensemble rehearsal times. If you have not received the information, please contact the Extra-Curricular Office via email – culturalevents@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au.
Students are required to schedule their Instrumental Music lesson times in their iPad calendar with a 15-minute reminder in place, to ensure that students attend their weekly lessons promptly with all required equipment.
Attendance
- Lessons and ensemble rehearsals are a weekly commitment and learning in the program is part of the school’s academic reporting each semester.
- Students who are unable to attend their 35-minute Instrumental Music lesson or ensemble should email their Instrumental Music teacher as early as possible.
- An explained absence is only granted for:
- school approved absence (approved excursion or illness); or
- for a scheduled in-class exam. Exam dates are listed on assessment calendars on StudentNet, and students should check and notify Instrumental Music teachers of any clashes immediately. - The school policy for all assignment submissions is 4:00pm on the due date, and these types of assessment responses are developed over time. Therefore, students should not be missing their 35-minute weekly Instrumental Music lesson or ensemble rehearsals for that purpose.

GPS & Boys Activities
Ms Vicki Goodall Director of GPS & Boys Activities

Within three days of school commencing, the Extra-Curricular Office, Masters in Charge, coaches and managers, were able to organise 40 teams across six venues for Round 1 of the GPS fixtures on Friday and Saturday.
Debating
Debating was an outstanding success, with State High winning seven of 10 debates last Friday night. The unsuccessful teams were defeated by the narrowest of margins to very capable St Joseph’s Nudgee College sides.
Swimming
There was good attendance at an invitational swimming meet at Anglican Church Grammar School last Friday night. Many of the swimmers posted improved times compared to the same meet last year. Congratulations to the boys for a victorious, but close, win over the girls in the Battle of the Sexes on Tuesday afternoon. Three points was the winning margin.
Cricket
Last Saturday, Cricket was played far and wide, using the Brisbane State High oval, Fursden Road Playing Fields and the fields on the ‘flats’ at Nudgee. Our 9A and 8A teams were the successful!

GPS Cricket Second XI, 8A and 9A teams
