QGSSSA Sports & Girls' Activities
I was recently reminiscing about the success of our Australian female athletes at last year’s Olympic Games in winning 13 of our 18 Gold Medals! It is truly an awesome time to be part of girl’s sport in Australia as numerous pathways continue to open for female athletes across all sporting codes. I encourage all girls to remain involved in multiple sports as much as possible as you never know where you may end up!
At BSHS, girls' sport continues to flourish in Term 3. Our participation in the QGSSSA is strong, with teams in Athletics, Badminton, Hockey, Netball, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Tennis and Volleyball actively training and competing. Additionally, we are involved in six other competitions and training sessions, including the Vicki Wilson Netball Championships, QLD Schools Cup Volleyball, CBSQ Basketball, All Schools Touch Football, UHL Sport Cup Football and the National Cross Country Championships.
Some weekend highlights for me in our Round 5 Winter clash with MBC was the performance of our Open girls Hockey who faced one of their toughest challenges in recent times yet recorded a dominant 5-1 victory against an undefeated MBC team. Then following this I had the pleasure of watching an epic 5 set battle in the Open Volleyball. A rollercoaster of a match for players and especially coaching staff but a great showing of resilience and staying in the fight. Well done girls!!
I extend my thanks to the dedicated staff, coaches, committee members and volunteers who work tirelessly to support our students, providing them with opportunities to participate in sport. Their commitment is invaluable to the success of our programs. Special thanks to the staff involved in recent competitions:
- QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships (Friday 15 August) - Mrs Rachael Slorach and Mrs Nicole Slinger (MICs)
- QLD Schools Cup Volleyball (Friday 15 August – Sunday 17 August) – Mr Glen Kranen (MIC)

Rhythmic Gynastics
On Friday 8 August, 47 of our girls travelled to the Logan Metro Sports Complex to compete in the 2025 QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.
After 12 weeks of early-morning trainings, the students’ teamwork, persistence, and commitment truly shone on the day.

The Open Group – Kyra Henderson, Zoey Xie, Emma Wang, and Sienna Strachan – impressed the judges with their ball routine, placing 1st.
-
The Open Freehand Pairs performed with flair, achieving 2nd and 3rd place.
-
The Open Pairs also excelled, proudly taking out 2nd place.

Congratulations to all the girls who have shown dedication during the initial weeks of athletics training. It is very early in the season and lots of girls are doing well in their competitions. Welldone!
Athletics is a true team event, where individual performances across various track and field events are vital to the overall team outcome. Keep up the great work.
Congratulations to our 12-year-old athletes who excelled at the Mt Gravatt District competition last week. A special mention to Ana Hsu who broke the district long jump record – held by current Year 8 student Jarrah Plumpton!
