Welcome
A very warm welcome to the 2019 school year and our first newsletter for the year. It has been good to welcome our students, both new and returning. We hope that every family had an enjoyable time through the holiday break. We extend a warm State High welcome to the new families who have joined us and we look forward to building our work with all of our students over the coming year.
Every student is important to us. We have a few more than last year, with 3,187 (as of 07/02/19). We have around 485 (current and future numbers) Year 7 students joining us this year. We have had over 127 new students to welcome in other year levels too.
Some handy information links to get you started:
Our Parent Information Handbook is available on our website and contains information about the organisation of Brisbane State High. Please take the time to read through the handbook and keep it for your reference. In the handbook you will find information about the day-to-day operations of the school, together with contact information for key personnel.

2019 School Priorities
Our Strategic Plan describes our three priority areas for the next four years. The 2019, priorities are:
Visible Progress |
|
Visible Expertise |
|
Visible Culture |
These priorities are underpinned by a focus on ‘visible learning’ where teachers are learning through the eyes of a student and students are seeing learning through the eyes of their teacher.
Class of 2018
I am very pleased for our graduating students of 2018. There were some very excited students as they received results and offers for this year. We had 100 per cent of students complete the requirements for a QCE/QCA, again. We are committed to ensuring that every student achieves this qualification. We had 506 students complete 644 vocational qualifications, including 48 Diplomas.
In terms of OP results, we had more students and equal or better percentages in each of the upper results than any other school in Queensland. This gives you an idea of the quality of the work of our students. They worked very hard. We had 67 students achieve an OP1, the highest by any Queensland school this year or in the history of OPs. In addition, we had 63 students achieve an OP2, that’s a total of 130. We had 229 (an amazing 50 per cent of a large group) of our students achieve an OP between 1 and 5. There were 358 (79 per cent) with OPs between 1 and 10. We had 434 (95 per cent) students achieve an OP1-15.
Our students had an exceptional year, breaking all sorts of records. I’d like to congratulate them on their hard work over an extended period of time, while acknowledging that they had excellent support from classroom teachers and their mentors.
We are here for our current students to strive for their best results and focus on progress while living healthy and active lives.

Dean of Students
Mrs Samantha Hawkins
Welcome
A very warm welcome to 2019. To those students, parents and families who are beginning their journey with State High this year, we look forward to working in partnership with you to enrich the lives of your children. I look forward to connecting with as many of our community members as possible throughout this year.
The first weeks of a school year are an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year and formulate a plan for success in the current year. In 2019, our students at State High will be exposed to a vast array of academic and extra-curricular opportunities. I encourage all of our students to engage with the variety of experiences that are on offer so that they can challenge themselves personally, socially and academically. With the right mindset, every experience is a learning experience and State High is a community that firmly believes, that with the right amount of support and challenge, great things are possible.
I would like to acknowledge the work of our Heads of Year and Heads of School, and Head of Student Culture and Engagement over the past two weeks. Student transition into 2019 has been smooth, allowing new learning to start immediately. Congratulations to our students for their enthusiasm and preparedness over the past two weeks. The learning routines and behaviours that have been set in the past fortnight are an indication that 2019 will be a great year at State High!
At State High, we ask that all students strive to be their personal best and this includes their active contribution to our culture. We are a proud learning community and an artefact of this is our high standards of presentation and behaviour. Our student community actively contributes to our culture and the impact students have on school culture cannot be underestimated. I ask that all of our students wear their uniform with pride and always conduct themselves in a way that would always attract the highest level of praise from the public. Through the small acts of pride in our uniform and respect for self and others, all students will be powerful contributors to our visible culture.
Parent Information Sessions
I encourage all parents to attend year level information evenings over the coming week. Your attendance at these events will provide you with an opportunity to meet teachers, Heads of Year, Heads of School and develop an awareness of the learning experiences that your children will be exposed to during 2019. Academic Achievement and Progress Awards Assembly
On Monday 4 February, we hosted our inaugural Academic Achievement and Progress Awards Assembly. We warmly welcomed back our graduating students of 2018 who achieved an OP1 and recognised the 389 students across Year 7 to 11 who achieved six or more As in Semester 2, 2018. The assembly also recognised 107 students across Year 7 to 11 who significantly improved their GPA over the course of Semester 2, 2018. There were 12 students who improved their GPA so much that they were the recipients of a Progress Award and were also acknowledged for achieving six As as a result of their dedication to improvement. Congratulations to all students who were award recipients on Monday. We are looking forward to hosting our next Academic Achievement and Progress Assembly in Semester 2 of this year.

Corporate Matters

Administrative Matters
Welcome back to our existing families and a sincere welcome to our new families.
Student Services
With the school being as large as it is, we have centralised as many of our services to students as we can. To this end, we have placed our day to day services, considered vital for students, in the B Block Student Services Centre located on the Vulture Street Campus. We are fortunate to have a very professional team of support staff who can assist students with most, if not all, enquiries.
This Centre looks after leave passes, finance, first aid, lost property, pastoral care, and the list goes on. If your child has any general questions about the school, please let them know to go to the Student Counter at the Centre.
Lost Property
Each year, literally hundreds of items of clothing find their way to lower B Block with most going unclaimed. Can I please suggest that you:
- NAME all personal items, no matter how small. When items are named, parents will receive a text to say that B Block Student Services are holding their lost property. We cannot provide this service if possessions are not named.
- Ask your student to CHECK the lost property area before you outlay more money to purchase another item of clothing. At the end of each term, all items of clothing are disposed of in a refuse bin as we do not have the space to store the volume that is collected.
End of the School Day
Once school has finished for the day, it is essential that all students leave the school grounds as there are no teachers on duty to supervise. Can you please advise your children that they are to go home immediately unless they have extra-curricular practice or any other official reason for being onsite?
Parking – Drop Down Zones - Bus Stop, Cordelia Street
We ask that parents arrange to collect their children a street or two away from the school. We are a big school and the congestion in the afternoon is a problem. In the event that you do not feel that surrounding streets provide a viable option for you, drop down zones are located in Cordelia Street and in Ernest Street (at the end of the Music Block). Please do not arrange to meet your child in Edmondstone Street as the parking in this street in minimal and visibility is poor. When using the drop down zones, it is unlawful to block lanes of traffic on the road.
We have also noted use of mobile phones by drivers trying to contact their children. This is a dangerous practice. Please park, then phone your children to make them aware of your location.
A bus stop is located in Cordelia Street (near the corner of Cordelia and Glenelg Streets). It is well used by our students. If your child uses this bus stop, please advise them to cross at the lights and not run across the road to catch their bus. Cordelia Street is a three lane street – the potential for a serious accident is high.
Change of Details
Existing families, please remember to let the school know if you have moved over the holiday period or if you have changed contact numbers. Also everyone please remember to let us know if there are ever any changes to:
- address
- medical details for your child
- your email address – this is how you will receive your child’s reports and other school communication
- contact numbers
Please advise of any changes to your contact details by emailing student_records@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au
Finance Matters
Financial statements for subject fees and other charges will be sent home within the first month of school. Statements will then be sent each term. Your support of this great school would be appreciated with prompt payment and/or early establishment of part payment plans. Information on how to pay or how to set up a payment plan is provided with your statement.
Changes will commence this year with regard to the distribution of financial statements to families. Term statements will no longer be mailed home to parents/guardians, they will instead be sent via email. Furthermore, the Department of Education’s finance system will generate a single invoice for each individual item, e.g. subject fees, excursions, extra-curricular activities and recreational activities in which your child participates. For example, if your child has subject fees due for English, Maths and Science, as well as an extra-curricular or recreational activity, you will receive an email with the individual invoice for each of these items attached. Subject invoices should be used for your information only – they do not need to be paid individually, rather, please wait for your term statement to arrive via email – usually sent in Week 3 of each term – and then pay all items due, as stated on the term statement. Subject fees are to be paid as soon as possible and due dates for payment of extra-curricular activity invoices will be advised by Masters in Charge. To ensure transparency and accountability, we will continue to accompany term statements with explanations of all charges.
We ask that you please check your junk/spam email folders, as occasionally emails that are auto-generated from our finance system may drop into these folders.
A reminder that the school does not offer the split family payment option for finance management. This came into effect in Semester 2, 2018.
We wish to advise that the cashless system that the P&C Association offers with the use of Student ID Cards is only available for use at the Canteens and the Uniform Shop. Year 7 students will be able to avail themselves of this cashless system once they receive their Student ID Cards.
Facility Matters
As usual, this school continues to improve its facilities to cater for changes and growth as well as undertake routine maintenance. The work that was undertaken over the Christmas break is as follows:
- The continuation of the bridge installation at Fursden Road – a generous donation from Mr Paul Brady, past student and past parent.
- The refurbishment of E Block Science block to create additional science laboratories to cater for demand.
- The creation of four classrooms in R Block (located on the corner of Glenelg and Merivale Streets opposite I Block and the Convention Centre).
- The construction of a classroom on the ground floor of I Block. We thank our State High Foundation body for their financial assistance to this project which will be used as an innovation space by our students and teachers.
- Painting of classrooms in Upper G Block.
- Repair to carpets and skirtings in classrooms of Upper G Block.
- Repairs to the broken sewerage line of the Indoor Sports Complex (F Block).
- The extension of the Merivale Street bin compound to cater for the Containers for Change Recycling program.
- The replacement of the floor covering of the E Block boys’ toilet.
- Routine checking of the AV systems in both PAC and Sports Complex.
- Topdressing and repairs to sprinkler heads on the Vulture Street Oval.
- Topdressing and repairs to sprinkler heads on the Fursden Road ‘top’ fields.
- Increased data cabling and powerpoints in Upper G Block for a new computer lab.
- Continuation of the staged program of installing security cameras around the school.
- Maintenance on the retractable seating in the PAC.
- Cleaning of gutters of buildings at South Brisbane and Carina school sites.
- Repairs to exit lights around the school.
During Term 1, we are awaiting quotes to undertake minor refurbishment of the Fursden Road amenities block.
Unfortunately, we still do not have the funds to undertake the significant landscaping work in the front of A and E Blocks to create more seating and shade areas for the students. This project has a substantial cost as it affects most of the Vulture Street frontage. All offers of financial assistance would be gratefully received. If you can assist with funding or services, please contact Ms Chris Collins on 3291 4111.

Student Voice
Senior School Leadership Group
Let me take you back to August 2012 - Brisbane State High School. I was 11 years old, in F Block sitting the academic entry exam; transfixed by the house banners, overwhelmed by the clock ticking away and intimidated by the sheer number kids just like me, wanting to do their best. This was my first ever experience with our school and whilst I was accepted and would go on to participate in the Aspiring Minds Program, State High offered my family and me so much more than a place as a prospective student in 2015; we now had the security we needed to move on with the next chapter of our lives.
Now, in my Senior Year, I could not be more eager and enthusiastic to give back to our school and start a new chapter as School Captain alongside Joanne, Joseph and Advaith, leading the Class of 2019 in what will be the best year of our lives!
The 2019 Prefect team has reflected on our time at State High to come up with our mission for this year. Our leadership aims to bring about a more united State High where everyone can find the courage to embrace who they are within a kind and enthusiastic school environment.
We witnessed this on the first day back at Battle of the Sexes where our Seniors, swimmers and supporters created the atmosphere of courage, kindness and enthusiasm that we wish to carry with us and build upon as the year continues.
Over the next few weeks, the Prefects will be busy preparing for one of the biggest events on the State High calendar - Valentine’s Day (Thursday 14 February - Week 3). Afterwards, we will have a greater focus on executing the initiatives we have developed to transform our assemblies, our environmental approach and to bring about greater unity in our school community.
For now, our message stands, “Have the courage to embrace who you are, be kind to one another and get keen for 2019!”

The first whole school event of the year is the Battle of the Sexes, where everyone can get involved and have a great time. It starts off with the war cries. Chanting school war cries hypes up the atmosphere and everyone shows their State High Spirit by screaming their lungs out! Then comes the racing, where boys race against girls. The more turnout for one gender gives a bigger advantage, so each student participating makes a big difference. Students of all skill levels and ages race and just have a good time. Even better yet, when you get out of the water, there’s a free sausage sizzle and snacks to refuel for your next big race! For those who are not willing to go for a swim, it is still a great opportunity to support friends, experience the State High Spirit, and participate in the war cries. Then at the end of this event, the winning gender is announced; this year it was the boys. Everybody should come out next year to support his or her gender and hopefully get the win!
Personally, the Battle of the Sexes wasn’t just a great opportunity for me to pick up swimming again during the GPS season, but also catch up with friends who I haven’t seen all holidays. The war cries really bring out the inner State High Spirit and I suggest students familiarise themselves with the war cries for next year’s event. Whether you choose to race, swim or support your peers, you would certainly have a great time, really immerse yourself in the State High community and show your State High Spirit. What better way to start off the school year?

Our Community
In this newsletter, we would like to introduce you to some of our new key staff members.
Mrs Samantha Hawkins – Dean of Students
It is with great excitement that I join the State High community. I am excited to be part of a school that recognises and nurtures the aspiration, learning capacity and uniqueness of all of its members. As an educator, I am committed to ensuring that each member of our community achieves their personal best and acquires a solid understanding of their strengths and future possibilities. Prior to joining the State High team, I have been a Deputy Principal in five schools and have been responsible for the senior phase of learning, student and staff wellbeing, curriculum leadership and student and staff leadership programs. Prior to being a Deputy Principal, I was a Senior Schooling Head of Department and have also spent time as a regional consultant to schools in the South East Region of Queensland. I am looking forward to serving the State High community to ensure success for our students.
Mr Joe O’Callaghan – Head of Junior School
I am coming into my new role as Head of Junior School after spending the past two years as Head of Department – Excellence Programs at Marsden State High School. Since starting with the Queensland Department of Education in 2006, I have been fortunate enough to work within a wide range of schools in Rockhampton, Gold Coast, Logan and Far North Queensland and have had the opportunity to step out of the Department to coach Rugby League full time in 2014 – 2016. Since returning to education, coaching is still a passion in my life and I have been given the opportunity to coach the Queensland Opens Schoolboys side for 2019. I am excited to be joining the Brisbane State High community and I look forward to the challenge and scope that my role brings.
Dr Trina Denner – Head of Senior English
Having spent the past three years within the State High community as a senior English teacher and with a background in creative writing and research, I have shifted into the role of Head of Senior English in 2019. The energy that our team has brought to the ushering in of the new Queensland syllabus has been inspiring and I am excited to be a part of such an innovative group of teachers as our redesigned curriculum unfolds.
Mr Brad Kelman – Head of Year 10
I am beyond thrilled and feel incredibly privileged to be joining the Brisbane State High community, especially as Head of Year 10. I have wanted to teach at State High for a very long time and now I finally have my chance! I have been fortunate to hold Head of Year and Head of House positions before but certainly not with a cohort of nearly 600 students and at a school with a fast pace that I am quickly becoming familiar with. I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead and sharing the journey with this amazing community. Thank you for having me here.
Ms Amy Hawke – Head of Year 11
I have been working at Brisbane State High School since 2013. Over this time I have seen our students excel with great breadth and depth across the academic and extra-curricular areas, with a focus on mathematics and student leadership. After a year away working with Pearson on mathematics resources, I am looking forward to working with the fantastic 2019 Year 11 cohort as Head of Year.
Ms Alicia Gray – Guidance Officer
It is with great excitement that I join the student support services team at Brisbane State High School. As one of the school’s three Guidance Officers, I look forward to working with students and families throughout their schooling journey. I have worked with students from prep to senior in my years as a teacher, and as a guidance officer most recently at Kelvin Grove State College. I have a strong passion for student engagement in education and pathways beyond school and I believe building relationships with key stakeholders is the key to success. Over the years, I have worked as a guidance officer with students during times of significant changes in education and believe it is an exciting time for young people to be experiencing the many opportunities of a State education. It is an absolute privilege and pleasure to work with students in this phase of their lives.
Ms Kara Wright – Youth Support Coordinator
I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice. My role here at Brisbane State High School as a Youth Support Coordinator is to provide individual support, and where appropriate, group support to at-risk and disengaged students. My aim is to improve students’ school experience, and in turn, improve their wellbeing and chances for success. I look forward to working with you all.
Ms Nicole Slinger – Teacher Librarian
Becoming a member of the State High community has been an exciting journey so far. As the new Teacher Librarian, I look forward to working with most students over their time at high school, either whilst promoting literature and reading for pleasure, or deepening their research skills. I have been a Teacher Librarian for 15 years and have gained skills in both the State and private secondary school sectors as well as at The University of Queensland, where I coordinated their library services for secondary schools. I am passionate about the difference a great library program can make to the outcomes of students and I will be working hard to maintain the great reputation of the Research Centre at State High.

Volunteers Needed for Canteens
We need volunteer help in our three canteens – any or all days of the week – especially Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, as these are our busiest days. If you are able to assist on any day, for one hour or more between 7:00am – 2:00pm, we would love to hear from you. Without volunteers to support our canteen operations, the P&C Association may have to consider increasing food prices to cover the costs associated with employing staff to operate the canteen service. Please contact the Canteen Manager on 0455 239 119 or by email – canteen@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au. We greatly appreciate those parents who have volunteered in the past and those who are currently helping us by volunteering some of their time.
Online Uniform Shop is Available Now
A reminder that the online Uniform Shop can be accessed online. The online shop is also accessible from the Uniform Shop page on the school website. All current uniform items are available as well as BSHS supporter clothing and memorabilia. Purchases made online offer collection from the Uniform Shop during opening hours or delivery via courier, with a delivery charge applicable. Did you Know… Student Injury Insurance
The P&C has purchased a group insurance policy, using voluntary contributions, which covers injury for all BSHS students who are injured at school or during a school sanctioned event, such as Interhouse Athletics Carnivals, extra-curricular activities and some other events when students represent the school. This insurance is available for all families of the school. Education Queensland does not provide insurance for students attending State schools. Please contact the P&C Office on 3291 4173 or pandc@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au for further information regarding the insurance cover.
Containers for Change Scheme
A friendly reminder that the P&C is registered to receive refunds for containers under the Containers for Change (C4C) Scheme. This will assist with fundraising for our school community as we receive 10 cents per container for all containers donated by using our Scheme ID – C10003701. We would like to encourage our school community, students, staff and families to collect accepted containers and take them to Container Refund Points (CRP) and remember to use our Scheme ID to ensure refunds are processed to our school account. This is great way to fundraise and recycle to support our environment. Funds from this scheme will be used for sustainability projects at our school, such as providing more green space and landscaped seating areas for students and staff.
Students and staff can deposit approved containers at the C4C bins provided around I Block.
Please click on the link below for information on how and where to return containers.

Classroom Artwork Project
To ensure that we met the New Year in vibrant style, a group of students volunteered over a week of their holidays to undertake the creation of fantastic murals in the Visual Art rooms. The murals, now waterproofed, serve the dual purpose of providing splatter-proof splashbacks for the brush-washing sinks and showcasing what’s possible when a group of artists creatively collaborate. Thank you so much to our wonderful student volunteers for their time and energy invested into this project.
Thank you to students, Jahnu Datar, Carmen Anaya Partida, Francesca, Natalie Doolette, Amily Ung and Emily Whitecross, for their colourful contribution to our Visual Art rooms over the holidays.
English
Dr Trina Denner Head of Senior English
Mr Clinton Shield Head of Junior English & Humanities
Enthusiasm in the English Department has begun on a high for 2019 as teachers and students across all year levels prepare for the learning experiences and challenges ahead. Together we will focus on skills and knowledge that will help prepare our students to be effective participants in 21st century society.
At the forefront of the Senior English Department has been the rollout of the new senior Queensland syllabi, with over 500 Year 11 students embarking on an exciting, redesigned program. They are set to explore both contemporary and classic texts and to engage in assessment which mirrors real-world scenarios. Students will now have the opportunity to study the newly introduced literature strand of English or a general English program.
That is not to take away from our Year 12 cohort who have arrived, bright-eyed and full of determination, ready to face the rigors of their culminating year of secondary schooling. We wish them all the best for their final year of learning with us and will supporting them with encouragement and expertise as they enter this home stretch.
It is often difficult to tell a story with just numbers, and although we should all be incredibly proud that 67.4 per cent of our Year 7 students and 52.1 per cent of our Year 9 students placed in the upper two bands for reading on the NAPLAN test, these statistics do not tell the whole story. At Brisbane State High, we value Visible Progress and the tangible and real-world gains that our students are making in this area of their learning has opened up, and will continue to open up, new pathways for them.
This year we will continue to provide opportunities for the Junior students to engage with their community, to evaluate their impact on our local community and to help them find their voice. An example of this was our Aspire Showcase at the end of Term 4 last year, where our amazing Year 7 Aspire students presented their solutions to real-world issues regarding the liveability of our local area. A panel of judges, including Cr Jonathan Sri, our local Councillor, were incredibly impressed by the work our students had put into their proposals. Congratulations to the winning team – Zoya Litvinyuk, Anna Sekulic and Lucy Zhou.
We look forward to sharing many more amazing moments like this throughout 2019.

Exchange Student Visit from France
On Monday 4 February, 22 students and two teachers arrived from the Lycee Pierre d'Ailly school located in Compiègne, France. This was part of a Humanities exchange that enabled our students to visit the Western Front in April 2018. This exchange was made possible by past student, Mr Kevin O’Brien, who established a connection with Lycee Pierre d'Ailly when he visited France with his work. The students are being hosted by several State High families and will participate in a plethora of diverse excursions to experience the Australian culture and ways of life. This includes a visit to Fort Lytton and the Queensland Museum as well as a surf lifesaving workshop on the Gold Coast. The students will spend four days in school following their host’s timetable and experiencing classes at Brisbane State High. Thank you very much to Modern History teacher Ms Raechel Smit for the hard work and organisation that went into coordinating this exchange. We also thank the host families who have opened up their homes to the French students and organised for them to experience more of Australia.

Volunteering/Sub-Committees in Extra-Curricular Activities
Volunteers underpin the success of Extra-Curricular activities at Brisbane State High. Due to the number of activities occurring each week, it is impossible to have them all covered by teachers. Any assistance that parents or past students can offer in coaching or managing, scoring, costuming, ticketing, officiating or working in the canteen is greatly appreciated.
Parents can also support the activity by becoming a member of the relevant sub-committee. Sub-committee members assist in fostering support of both the activity and the MIC amongst parents/guardians. Our sub-committees also provide invaluable financial assistance through fundraising and are overseen by the school’s P&C Association. If you are available to assist, please contact the MIC of the relevant activity.
Levies
All non-curriculum activities conducted at the school have a user-pays structure. A levy to participate in an activity is payable to cover the cost of that year’s delivery of the activity. If you have any questions relating to levies, please contact the MIC of the activity or B Block Finance Counter.

Instrumental Music and Dance Troupe Sub-Committees
The Instrumental Music and Dance Troupe programs both have dedicated sub-committees that meet monthly and assist with fundraising and supporting events, enabling our programs to function at their traditional high levels.
Without volunteers and parent support it is challenging to raise funds that subsidise resources for these programs and run events effectively. If you have a child involved in Instrumental Music or Dance Troupes, the sub-committees invite you to attend their first meetings of the year:

QGSSSA & Girls’ Activities
Ms Anita Woodward Director of QGSSSA & Girls’ Activities
Welcome to QGSSSA Sport for 2019. In the 110th year of QGSSSA in 2018, State High upheld its proud tradition with Open premierships achieved in six of the eight team sports and an overall school championship in Cross Country. This outstanding success is testament to the commitment of our students and the tireless work of our Masters in Charge (MICs) of girls’ sport.
The year has started well with team training having commenced for Swimming, Cross Country, Senior Softball and Cricket. Sign on meetings for the Autumn sports – which are Touch Football, Football (soccer) and Basketball – were held this week. Students are reminded to read student notices available on StudentNet. Parents are also reminded that team information and match schedules are posted on Team App and also on the Sport This Week page on the school website.
Girls’ Cross Country is a Family Affair in 2019
The Cross Country sign on for the QGSSSA season was a great success on Friday 1 February. There were 112 girls who attended the first run of the season, conducted at South Bank. This year, we have a number of sisters running in the team which is likely to lead to some friendly sibling rivalry.
The team culture and sense of community at the session.
The team motto is, “We are all in this together.”
2019 promises to be an awesome year as we work together to achieve our individual and team goals. It is never too late to sign on for Girls’ Cross Country. Contact Mr John Davis - MIC on jdavi118@eq.edu.au or attend any of the training sessions, which are held Monday (7:15am), Tuesday (7:15am) and Friday (7:30am) mornings and Wednesday afternoons (3:00pm).

GPS & Boys’ Activities
Mr Matthew Hannan Director of GPS & Boys’ Activities
“Blue-Red-Blue” Spirit:
At State High, our involvement in the GPS competition is reliant on the availability of volunteers to support extra-curricular activities. I sincerely appreciate all volunteers who have already nominated to be involved in the 2019 BSHS GPS Extra-Curricular Program. From Year 11 student coaches, to past student coaches, to parents who lead or support Parent Group activities, to the outstanding teaching staff who make time to supervise students and student coaches at events - you are all vital contributors, the ‘enablers’ of this public school program. In particular, my sincere acknowledgement goes the MICs of Term 1 Activities; Mr Sāndor Harris, Mr Glen Kranen, Mr Jesse Rigsby-Jones, Mr Anthony Peterman, Mr Stephen Cuthbert and Ms Jessica Pommeranz. These incredible staff members have been leading pre-season training and camps on their holiday breaks. Thank you sincerely to these MICs for their outstanding efforts; in addition to Firsts Coaches, Mr Cameron Stephenson, Mr Jesse Rigsby-Jones, Mr Sāndor Harris, Mr Bruce Barrett and Ms Cate MacColl. Finally, I would like to make a special acknowledgement to Mr Wayne Niven; the previous First XI Cricket Coach and recent Director of GPS & Boys' Activities. Mr Niven is a proud past student who always demonstrates an exemplary attitude and mindset, based off an outstanding work ethic. We wish Mr Niven well in his future endeavours. I am sure that the skills and life lessons that Mr Niven has taught will assist our First XI to be strong role models throughout the GPS 2019 season, and exemplary contributors to the wider society.
The Secret of Getting Ahead
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” (Mark Twain).
Essentially, Mr Twain recommends the development of productive habits. These can be developed across a variety of settings; from the classroom to extra-curricular contexts. It is necessary to reflect on your habits before, during and after undertaking activities. I challenge every student currently undertaking extra-curricular activities to honestly reflect:
- Do you exert yourself fully, every moment of every week?
- Do you perform any routines differently each week, in order to better yourself?
- If you are not getting the results you want, are you seeking feedback from the visible expertise available at school and using this feedback to improve?
If a student is struggling with any of the indicators above, they can improve through:
- Avoiding the justification of shortcuts. Instead, justify working on ‘extras’. Work on developing new skills before and after training, without being actively mentored.
- Initiative – make it happen. Students’ level of engagement and subsequent success is often a choice. As champion AFL player Ron Barassi proclaimed in 2014, “If it’s to be – it’s up to me.”
- Being constructive. As quoted by highly successful Rugby League Coach Wayne Bennett, “Don't get bitter, get better”. Seek feedback, continue to strive for progress, more so than perfection, in order to make a meaningful difference.
- Arriving to every training session ahead of time, with all necessary equipment.
- Relaxing between sessions, not during sessions.
2019 Vision
Let 2019 be the year that we continue to contribute to the Blue-Red-Blue legacy. Thank you for your ongoing support of GPS and Boys’ Activities and best of luck across our GPS activities!

The 2018 Cambodia Project
On 29 November 2018, 30 State High students gathered at Brisbane International Airport to embark on their journey to Cambodia. We, Anna and Lily, were among those 30. We left that day with 28 other acquaintances, just familiar faces from the school’s overpass, with no knowledge of each other or the next 14 days ahead. Little did we know in two short weeks, the 30 strangers would become a family with a bond unlike any other, and those 14 days would become the most memorable and impactful days of our lives.
The day was a long time coming. Four years ago, both of our older sisters took part in the 2014 Cambodia Project and after arriving home they’d shared their passion and life-changing experiences with us. From this, we both knew, in our little Grade 6 minds, that we too would take on this journey and experience it for ourselves one day. Finally, it was our turn.
If we told you that we were sheltered from Cambodia’s painful history, slowly dipped our toes into their immensely different way of life and our hands were held the whole time, this would be a lie. We dove straight into the deep end. On the tuk-tuk ride away from the airport, it was immediately clear we weren’t in Brisbane anymore: Phnom Penh’s biggest mansion and a slum shared a fence.
Nine days of our short trip was spent in Taskor Village, where we met the Vorn Vu family, saw the site where our project would come to life and give this family a fresh start. This family of three generations was living on the bank of a river on a 45 degree slope. Their house was inching closer to the water and risked collapse any day. The grandmother told us that she would leave the door open every night in fear of having to evacuate. In true State High fashion, we took on the challenge and became the first school to complete building an entire house during their stay in Cambodia.
During the ‘hand-over’ ceremony, the grandmother expressed her appreciation to us, and despite not understanding what she was saying, everyone present could agree that nothing could compare to that feeling of pride. Every effort spent fundraising, every minute of travel it took to be there, every splinter, the blood, sweat and the tears all became worth it.

Exchange Program to Germany
During the summer holidays, when everybody was suffering under the hot Australian sun, my German classmates and I were enjoying the sub-zero temperatures in Hanover, Germany, on the German Exchange Program.
The program runs from June to July, and December to January. Being an exchange student, I was matched with my very own German counterpart – Florian. He flew to Australia in June and stayed for six weeks.
After hearing all about how great Germany was, we couldn’t wait to travel there and experience it for ourselves. So, in December nine of my classmates and Ms McMillin flew away from the tarmac-melting heat to the teeth-chattering cold. The whole trip to Germany was also six weeks and we spent five weeks living with our exchange partners and a week in Berlin. During this time, we got used to walking on the right, wearing oversized coats and basking in the wonderful warmth of the Hanover Christmas markets. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and before we knew it, we were off to Berlin.
A week is barely enough to experience one of the most populated cities in Europe. We visited parts of the Berlin Wall, ate the cheapest and best ice cream ever, and even spent time singing along in a ‘blinged-out’ telephone booth. It was all so much fun, especially with all my friends as well! Going to Germany was definitely my highlight for the year.

Swim Camp
Swim Camp is a highlight of the year at Brisbane State High. The chance to catch up with old team mates, meet new ones and, of course, train hard in a fun atmosphere all make Swim Camp a great experience. Held each year at the Runaway Bay Sports Complex, activities included morning swimming training, yoga and stretching, HIIT fitness sessions, Zumba, trivia, leadership games and beach activities. This year, the Girls’ Swimming Team welcomed new Coach, Mr David Lush, who is highly credentialed and excited for the season ahead and to be working the BSHS team.
The positive culture and inclusivity of the Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming Teams has been maintained due to the team bonding that occurs at Swim Camp. Our 2019 Swimming Captains are Gabby Williams-Scudamore, Isabella Nasser, Alexander Kim and Flynn Mulcahy. All Swimming Captains agree, “The team felt stronger than ever and the encouragement around the pool deck throughout the camp was amazing to see. It was great to have the guidance and support from the new Coach, David Lush, as he is a highly experienced coach and has a great love for swimming.” We loved seeing students giving things a go and testing themselves to be their best.
The hard work and dedication from MICs, Ms Jo Garner and Mr Anthony Peterman, ensure the Swim Camp goals are achieved. Thank you to the other staff members who gave up some of their holiday time to help the Swimming Team. These staff were Mr Peter Mihos, Mrs Wendy Williams, Ms Christie Mylrea and Mrs Janine Bennett.

Message from our 2019 Swimming Captains
We are privileged to be a part of the incredible Swim Team at Brisbane State High School. Best wishes to all swimmers as they now compete in lead-up meets in preparation for QGSSSA and GPS Championships. We look forward to following tradition and attending next year’s Swim Camp as outgoing captains.

Prefect Fundraiser
It’s almost time again for one of State High’s biggest traditions of the year –Valentine’s Day! The event is used as a major fundraiser for the Senior Gift and this year there will be a love-themed bake sale with all profits going towards the Townsville flood relief.
Prefects are selling chocolates, roses, heart shaped balloons and live serenades to anyone who would like to show a special someone some love on this special day. Stalls will be held at lunch times under I Block and in the C Block courtyards until Wednesday 13 February to ensure they are delivered to their recipients on Cupid’s favourite day. There will also be multiple photo booths on both campuses for any keen happy snappers who want to capture and share the love!
Come and find a stall or a hearted-up prefect at lunch times leading up to Valentine’s Day to surprise your friends on Thursday 14 February, and bring along your donations for the people of Townsville.
With love,
The Prefects

QLD Youth Shake Fest Production ‘Hamlet’
Two of our students, Jessica Kininmonth and Vince Lapore, performed in QLD Youth Shake Fest’s production of ‘Hamlet’ over the holidays, following their performances in the Shake Fest State Finals in 2018. They share some of their thoughts on the experience below:
One of the lengthiest and most cherished texts of Shakespeare – with only a week to rehearse. The QLD Youth Shake Fest production of 2019 was incredible! I will never forget what it was like to work on this play with shake & stir theatre co and 34 other extremely talented cast members.
I will miss walking on the revolving stage while it spun, being essentially the stagehand for the show, the blue glow of the lights backstage, the tea from the kitchen further back, and the friendly smiles and greetings I always saw at every rehearsal. Despite being my first show, I cannot express my admiration for everyone there and the experience I had. I hope next year will be even better because I had such a blast.
Vince Lapore, Year 10
Working with the shake & stir theatre co on an adapted and abridged version of Shakespeare’s greatest play, ‘Hamlet’ was an amazing learning opportunity. The cast consisted of 35 Shakespeare fans from all around Queensland who specialised in either dance, music and composing or acting. It was so much fun working with such talented cast members and directors. I highly recommend anyone interested in drama, dance, costume design, music, acting, photography or film making to get involved in shake & stir’s annual Shake Fest competition as it was such a unique experience.

School Leaders’ Induction Ceremony
Our School Leaders’ Induction Ceremony will be held on Monday 11 February commencing at 11:30am at the South Bank Piazza, South Bank.
This prestigious annual school event celebrates and acknowledges our new School Leaders including School Captains, Prefects, House Leaders, Student Representative Council Leaders and Junior School Leaders for 2019.
It is our school’s tradition to invite our past School Captains as keynote speakers to present our new leaders with their badges. This year, we are delighted to welcome our 2015 School Captains, Ms Gemma Kane and Mr Sean McCarthy.
A reminder that the School Leaders’ Induction Ceremony is a whole school event and students must wear their formal school uniform, including hat. Boys are to wear their white shirts and school ties. Year 12 students being inducted must wear their school blazer.
Parents are reminded that students will not be issued with leave passes on the days of our significant celebratory events, unless there are extenuating circumstances and the circumstance can be verified by the parent/guardian.
We look forward to welcoming our parents of Student Leaders to this special event.
Students have been advised about timetable changes.
